Whirlpool Oven F7E1 — Door/latch common switch wire shorted

Whirlpool Oven · Error code F7E1

What F7E1 Means

The common wire shared between the door switch and the latch switch is shorted. The control can't distinguish door-open from door-closed reliably.

Symptoms

  • F7E1 on display
  • Oven light may stay on or off incorrectly
  • Self Clean won't start

Common Causes

1
Shorted wire between door switch and latch switch

Insulation worn through where the harness runs over a sharp edge.

2
Failed door switch or latch switch

Internal short inside the switch presents to the control as the common wire shorted.

3
Damaged connector at the control board

A pin pushed back or bent in the latch-circuit connector can short two adjacent leads.

How to Fix It

  1. Kill power at the breaker.
  2. Access the door switch and latch switch wiring at the top of the oven (range) or the front trim (wall oven).
  3. Visually inspect the harness for chafing, melted insulation, or pinch points; repair any damaged section.
  4. Disconnect each switch and ohm-check it: open-circuit on the normally-open contacts when not actuated, continuity when actuated. Replace any switch that's shorted regardless of position.
  5. Reseat the connector at the control board, checking that no pins are pushed back.
  6. Restore power and confirm the oven light responds correctly to the door opening — that tells you the switch circuit is healthy.
