GE Refrigerator Water Filter Guide (MWF, XWF & More)
GE refrigerators use a handful of filter families, and the tricky part is that GE switched designs over the years (MWF to XWF to XWFE). Matching the right one is just reading the part number off your old filter — then it is a two-minute swap.
Which GE Filter Do I Need?
The MWF (also MWFP / 'SmartWater') is the classic GE filter used on many side-by-side and French-door models for years — fits GE, GE Profile, Hotpoint, and many Kenmore. Newer models switched to the XWF, then the XWFE (the XWFE added an electronic chip; GE confirms it is backward-compatible and works in XWF fridges -- but an XWF installed in an XWFE fridge seats fine and is then rejected electronically, so the fridge won't dispense). Some older top- and bottom-freezer models with internal dispensers use the GSWF. Many GE French-door models (GFE28, PFE28, etc.) instead use the RPWF or the RFID-chipped RPWFE -- a non-chipped RPWF will NOT work in a fridge that calls for RPWFE. Match the exact part number on your current filter; GE's lineup is easy to mix up.
XWF vs XWFE — Don't Mix Them Up
This is the most common GE filter mistake: the XWFE replaced the XWF and has a small electronic contact ('RFID-style' chip strip) the newer fridges look for. If your fridge calls for XWFE, an XWF will physically install but the fridge rejects it electronically and stops dispensing. If it calls for XWF, the XWFE works fine -- GE states it is backward-compatible, and it is the ongoing replacement as the XWF phases out. Check the label inside the filter compartment or your manual and buy the exact one listed.
OEM vs Compatible, and Replacing It
Genuine GE filters run about $40-55; NSF 42/53-certified compatibles run roughly $15-25. Replace every six months or when flow drops. Most GE filters twist a quarter turn to release (interior) or push-release (in some bottom grilles). Flush 2-4 gallons afterward (early sputtering/cloudiness is normal). GE indicator lights usually reset by holding the dispenser 'Reset Filter' button about 3 seconds.
