Portable Air Conditioner Not Cooling — Fixes

4 min read

Portable air conditioners are convenient but finicky about drainage, filters, and exhaust setup. A unit that runs without cooling almost always has one of these issues.

1. Empty the Condensate Tank

Most portable ACs stop cooling (and flash a "full" light) when the internal condensate tank fills. Drain it via the drain plug. In humid weather it fills fast — set up continuous drainage with a hose if your model supports it.

2. Clean the Filter

A clogged filter chokes airflow and kills cooling. Most portable ACs have a washable filter that should be rinsed every couple of weeks in cooling season. Rinse, dry, and reinstall.

3. Fix the Exhaust Hose Setup

The exhaust hose must vent hot air outside (through the window kit) and be as short and straight as possible. A hose that is kinked, too long, or not sealed at the window dumps heat back into the room — the unit runs but the room never cools. Seal the window kit gaps.

4. Right-Size the Room

Portable ACs are less efficient than window units and are easily undersized. If the unit is too small for the room (check BTU vs square footage) or the room gets direct sun, it will run constantly without cooling. Close blinds and doors to the space.

FAQ

Why is my portable AC running but not cooling?

Usually a full condensate tank, a clogged filter, or a poor exhaust-hose setup dumping heat back inside. Drain the tank, clean the filter, and make sure the exhaust vents fully outside.

Do portable ACs need to be drained?

Many do in humid conditions when the internal tank fills. Use the drain plug, or set up continuous drainage with a hose if supported.
