Rice Cooker Not Working or Not Cooking — Fixes
Rice cookers work by sensing the bottom temperature of the inner pot, so most problems trace to the pot-to-sensor contact or power. Here's the quick rundown.
1. Check Power and the Switch
Confirm it's plugged into a working outlet and the cook lever/button actually engaged (it should click into Cook, not Warm). On units with a magnetic switch, the lever won't stay down until there's a pot with food and the bottom heats — that's normal.
2. Clean the Thermal Sensor and Pot Bottom
The spring-loaded thermal sensor (the metal disc in the center of the heating plate) must make good contact with the bottom of the inner pot. Food debris, or a warped/dented pot bottom, breaks that contact so it senses temperature wrong and shuts off early or won't cook. Clean the sensor and the heating plate, and make sure the sensor springs up freely.
3. Warped Inner Pot
A dented or warped inner pot doesn't sit flush on the sensor, causing uneven cooking or early shutoff. Replacement inner pots are available for many models — a worn nonstick or warped pot is worth replacing.
4. Shuts to Warm Too Early
A rice cooker switches from Cook to Warm when the bottom sensor reads that the water has boiled off. If it does this with rice still wet, the sensor contact is poor (clean it) or the pot is warped. If it never switches, the sensor or switch may have failed — on a cheap unit, replace it.

FAQ
Usually poor contact between the inner pot and the thermal sensor — clean the sensor disc and heating plate, and make sure the pot bottom is flat and seated. Also confirm it's on Cook (not Warm) and plugged into a working outlet.
The bottom thermal sensor is misreading — usually from food debris on the sensor/plate or a warped inner pot breaking contact. Clean the sensor and check the pot sits flush.
