Refrigerator Water Dispenser Not Working

4 min read

When the in-door water dispenser stops, the cause is almost always the filter, a frozen supply line, or water pressure. Work through these from easiest to hardest.

1. Change the Water Filter

A clogged or overdue filter is the most common cause of weak or no dispenser water. Replace it (every 6 months) and check if flow returns. After changing, flush a few gallons through to clear air.

2. Thaw a Frozen Water Line

If the filter is fine but no water comes out, the supply tube in the freezer door (or running through the freezer) may be frozen — common if the freezer is set too cold. Turn the freezer up a few degrees, and you can speed the thaw by leaving the dispenser unused for a day, or warming the door tube area.

3. Check Water Pressure and Supply

The dispenser needs at least ~20 psi to work. Confirm the saddle/shutoff valve behind or under the fridge is fully open and the line is not kinked. Low household pressure or a partly closed valve causes slow or no dispense.

4. Water Inlet Valve

If the supply is good, the filter is new, and nothing is frozen but still no water, the water inlet valve at the back of the fridge may have failed. It is a moderate DIY replacement.

FAQ

Why is no water coming out of my fridge door?

Most often a clogged filter or a frozen water line in the door. Replace the filter first; if nothing is dispensing, check for a frozen supply tube and confirm the water valve is open.

Can a frozen water line stop the dispenser?

Yes — if the freezer is too cold the door supply tube freezes. Raise the freezer temperature a few degrees and let it thaw.

Always unplug an appliance and shut off its water supply before servicing. This guide is informational and not a substitute for a qualified technician.
