Chamberlain Garage Door Opener 1-5 — Safety sensor wires reversed or shorted
Chamberlain Garage Door Opener · Error code 1-5
What 1-5 Means
The safety sensor circuit detects a short or polarity reversal. Often the white and white-with-black wires are swapped at one sensor or pinched.
Symptoms
- 1 flash then 5 flashes
- Neither sensor LED illuminates
- Door will not close from remote
Common Causes
White and white-with-black swapped at one sensor.
Insulation cut by staple against metal track.
Internal short in one of the sensors.
How to Fix It
- At each sensor, verify white wire goes to white terminal and white-with-black goes to the marked terminal — they must match on both ends.
- Inspect the entire wire run for damaged insulation; replace damaged sections.
- Disconnect one sensor at a time at the motor head. If the code clears with one disconnected, that sensor is faulty.
- Replace the failed sensor pair (sold as a set).
