Generac Generator 1300 — High Engine Temperature
Generac Generator · Error code 1300
What 1300 Means
Coolant or cylinder head temperature exceeded the safe limit and the unit shut down. On air-cooled Guardians this means cylinder head temp; on liquid-cooled units it means coolant temp.
Symptoms
- 1300 alarm on display
- Generator shut down mid-run
- Hot air or steam visible at enclosure
- Repeats quickly after restart
Common Causes
Leaves, snow, mulch, or a wasp nest blocking the louvered intakes on the enclosure.
Air-cooled engines lose heat rejection when fins are caked with dust/grass.
Loss of coolant from a leak or boil-over reduces heat capacity.
CHT sensor on the head reads high incorrectly.
Sized too small for connected load — engine overheats under sustained max output.
How to Fix It
- Switch to OFF and let the unit cool 30 minutes minimum.
- Walk all four sides — clear any leaves, snow drifts, mulch piled within 3 ft, or animal nests inside the enclosure.
- Remove side panels and blow out cylinder fins with compressed air; clean any debris off the flywheel screen.
- Liquid-cooled only: check coolant level in the recovery tank cold, top with 50/50 prediluted ELC if low, inspect hoses for leaks.
- Inspect the CHT (cylinder head temperature) sensor wiring — chafed wire shorting to ground reads false high.
- Restart in Manual and watch the temperature trend on the controller. If it climbs unloaded, sensor is suspect.
- If 1300 returns, replace the temperature sensor and clear the fault.
