Generac Generator 1600 — Overspeed
Generac Generator · Error code 1600
What 1600 Means
Engine RPM exceeded the safe threshold (typically >72 Hz on 60 Hz units, or ~3,960 RPM for 3,600 RPM gensets) and the controller shut down to prevent flywheel failure. This is a safety shutdown and must not be ignored.
Symptoms
- 1600 alarm
- Loud engine RPM surge before shutdown
- Frequency on AC output reading high before fault
- Won't restart in Auto
Common Causes
Sticky linkage holds throttle wide open.
Electronic throttle body locked at high position.
Controller mis-reads AC frequency from a failing rotor or grounding issue.
Sheared flywheel key changes timing and RPM.
How to Fix It
- DO NOT keep restarting — confirm the throttle returns to idle when the unit is off.
- With unit OFF and cool, manually move the throttle linkage by hand — should spring back smoothly. Free any binding.
- Inspect the stepper motor connector for corrosion; reseat or replace harness.
- Check flywheel key (carbureted air-cooled) — if sheared, RPM and timing go wild. Replace key.
- If linkage and key are good, call a dealer — stepper motor or controller may need replacement.
