40 E — Freezer Fan Error

The freezer evaporator fan is not running at the expected speed. Almost always either iced-over (fan blade hitting frost) or a failed fan motor. Without freezer fan airflow, both compartments warm up.

How to fix it

  1. Unplug the fridge and empty the freezer.
  2. Force-defrost (model-specific combo) or manually thaw with a hair dryer (low heat, keep moving).
  3. Remove the freezer rear panel to inspect the evap fan and coils.
  4. Spin the fan blade by hand — should turn freely.
  5. Test fan motor with a multimeter; replace if open.
  6. If frost was excessive, also test the defrost heater, sensor, and bimetal — don't just fix the fan.

Why it happens

Typical signs: Freezer warming up · Fridge also warming (shared airflow models) · Loud buzzing or clicking from freezer · Ice cream soft

  • Iced freezer evaporator fan Frost buildup on coils contacts the blade and stalls it — usually points to a defrost system fault.
  • Failed freezer fan motor Motor windings open or bearings seized.
  • Underlying defrost failure Defrost heater, sensor, or bimetal has failed and let frost build.
  • Wire harness fault Broken wire to the fan.

Replace your water filter

A clogged or overdue water filter is a common cause of low water and ice flow on Samsung refrigerators — they are meant to be changed about every 6 months. The OEM-style filter that fits most Samsung refrigerators is the DA29-00020B ($45-55 OEM, $15-25 compatible).
