Samsung Refrigerator 40 E — Freezer Fan Error
Samsung Refrigerator · Error code 40 E
What 40 E Means
The freezer evaporator fan is not running at the expected speed. Almost always either iced-over (fan blade hitting frost) or a failed fan motor. Without freezer fan airflow, both compartments warm up.
Symptoms
- Freezer warming up
- Fridge also warming (shared airflow models)
- Loud buzzing or clicking from freezer
- Ice cream soft
Common Causes
Frost buildup on coils contacts the blade and stalls it — usually points to a defrost system fault.
Motor windings open or bearings seized.
Defrost heater, sensor, or bimetal has failed and let frost build.
Broken wire to the fan.
How to Fix It
- Unplug the fridge and empty the freezer.
- Force-defrost (model-specific combo) or manually thaw with a hair dryer (low heat, keep moving).
- Remove the freezer rear panel to inspect the evap fan and coils.
- Spin the fan blade by hand — should turn freely.
- Test fan motor with a multimeter; replace if open.
- If frost was excessive, also test the defrost heater, sensor, and bimetal — don't just fix the fan.
