Whirlpool Dishwasher F3E3 — OWI Calibration Failure / Bad Check Valve

Whirlpool Dishwasher · Error code F3E3

What F3E3 Means

The Optical Water Indicator failed its self-calibration, often because dirty wash water from the drain hose is backflowing into the tub through a failed drain hose check valve.

Symptoms

  • F3E3 on display
  • Visible dirty water in tub at start of cycle
  • Poor cleaning results
  • Cycle aborts after fill

Common Causes

1
Failed drain hose check valve / improper high loop

Drain water siphons back into the tub, fouling the OWI lens.

2
Dirty OWI lens

Hard water film or food debris coats the sensor optics.

3
Failed OWI sensor

Sensor electronics no longer respond to calibration.

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm the drain hose has a proper high loop secured to the underside of the countertop, or is connected above the disposer trap (min 20" above floor).
  2. Remove the filter and clean the OWI sensor lens in the sump with a soft cloth and white vinegar.
  3. Inspect the drain hose check valve at the sump outlet for debris and free movement; replace if damaged.
  4. Run a hot empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner.
  5. If F3E3 returns, replace the OWI sensor assembly.
