Whirlpool Dishwasher FAE1 — Detergent Dispenser Failure

Whirlpool Dishwasher · Error code FAE1

What FAE1 Means

The control cannot energize the detergent dispenser wax motor, or doesn't see it open during the wash phase. Detergent stays trapped in the cup.

Symptoms

  • FAE1 (10-1) on display
  • Detergent cup still full at end of cycle
  • Poor cleaning
  • Tablet stuck in dispenser

Common Causes

1
Failed wax motor in dispenser

Most common — the wax actuator burned out.

2
Loose harness to dispenser

Connector behind the inner door panel backed off.

3
Mechanical jam in dispenser door

Detergent buildup gluing the lid shut.

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the dispenser cup and lid with a damp cloth and verify the lid swings freely.
  2. Power off, remove the inner door panel screws, and locate the dispenser assembly.
  3. Reseat the harness at the back of the dispenser.
  4. Test the wax motor — apply 120VAC for ~30 seconds (per tech sheet) and watch for the actuator to extend.
  5. Replace the detergent dispenser assembly if the wax motor does not actuate.
