How to Descale a Keurig (and Fix a Keurig That Won't Brew)
Mineral scale from your water is the number-one reason a Keurig brews short cups, runs slow, or stops brewing entirely. Descaling every three months clears it and is the first fix to try for almost any Keurig problem.
When to Descale
Every 3 months, or sooner if you see the "descale" light, the machine brews partial cups, runs loudly, or is slow. Hard-water homes need it more often.
How to Descale
Empty the water reservoir and remove any filter. Fill it with a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water (or Keurig descaling solution). Run brew cycles (no pod) into a mug, dumping each one, until the reservoir is empty. Let it sit 30 minutes, then run several reservoirs of fresh water to rinse out all the vinegar taste.
Keurig Won't Brew a Full Cup
Clogged needles are the usual cause. Turn it off and unplug it. Use a paperclip to gently clear the entrance and exit needles inside the pod holder (lift the handle, remove the pod holder assembly). Descale, then run a cleansing brew. The pokey needle gunk plus scale is what causes short pours.
Keurig Says "Add Water" When Full
Remove the reservoir, clean the bottom valve and the magnet area, and reseat it firmly. Air bubbles in the line can also trigger this — fill the reservoir, then tap the side and reseat it.
