GE Dishwasher C5 — Heater / Heat Fault

GE Dishwasher · Error code C5

What C5 Means

C5 indicates the drain time was unusually short — the control detected the dishwasher was underfilled with water during the cycle. It points to a fill problem (water supply, inlet valve, or float) or water escaping the tub, not a heating problem.

Symptoms

  • C5 mid- or late-cycle
  • Dishes not drying
  • Water never gets hot
  • Cycle runs unusually long

Common Causes

1
Faulty water inlet valve

Valve restricted or failing to open fully, so the tub never reaches its proper water charge.

2
Low supply pressure or partially closed shutoff valve

Kinked or clogged supply line, or a supply valve under the sink that isn't fully open.

3
Stuck or defective overfill float

Float stuck in the up position cuts the fill short; tap the float cover (front left corner of the tub floor) to free it.

4
Water escaping the tub

Tub or door gasket leak, leaky diverter valve, or a clogged pump inlet leaves too little water for the cycle.

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm the water supply shutoff valve under the sink is fully open and the supply line is not kinked.
  2. Check the overfill float (upside-down cup at the front left of the tub floor): lift it and let it drop — it should move freely. Clean any debris under it.
  3. Start a cycle and verify water enters the tub for the full fill period; a weak or short fill points to the inlet valve.
  4. Disconnect power, then test the water inlet valve solenoid for continuity; replace the valve if open or if the screen is heavily scaled.
  5. Inspect under the tub for leaks (door gasket, diverter, hose clamps) that could be dumping fill water.
  6. If fill volume and valve test good, suspect the float switch circuit or main control.
