C8 Moderate Easy DIY

GE Dishwasher C8 — Detergent Dispenser Fault

GE Dishwasher · Error code C8

What C8 Means

C8 indicates the control did not get expected feedback from the detergent dispenser actuator — usually a stuck or empty dispenser, or a failed dispenser solenoid.

Symptoms

  • C8 mid-cycle
  • Detergent cup still full at end of run
  • Dishes not clean

Common Causes

1
Detergent cup jammed by caked powder

Old powder detergent fused the lid shut.

2
Tall items blocking dispenser

Cookie sheet or large platter in lower rack blocked cup from opening.

3
Failed dispenser solenoid/wax motor

Actuator no longer releases the lid.

4
Broken dispenser linkage

Lid latch or spring inside the door panel broke.

How to Fix It

  1. Open the dispenser, scrape out any caked detergent, and clean with hot water.
  2. Reload with fresh detergent (pods preferred over powder for reliability).
  3. Re-rack so no large items block the dispenser door.
  4. If the door still won't open, remove the inner door panel and inspect the dispenser solenoid and linkage.
  5. Replace the dispenser assembly if the solenoid is open or the latch is broken.
