AF Moderate Easy DIY

GE Dryer AF — Air Flow restriction

GE Dryer · Error code AF

What AF Means

The control has detected restricted exhaust airflow. The dryer is telling you the vent path is blocked — this is the most common cause of long dry times and the leading dryer fire risk if ignored.

Symptoms

  • AF on display
  • Clothes still damp after a full cycle
  • Dryer runs hot to the touch
  • Burning smell
  • Long dry times

Common Causes

1
Clogged exhaust vent

Lint buildup in the wall duct or roof/wall cap is the #1 cause.

2
Crushed or kinked transition hose

Dryer pushed back against the wall pinches the foil/flex duct.

3
Full or blocked lint screen

Fabric softener residue can clog a screen that 'looks' clean.

4
Failed blower wheel

Cracked blower wheel slips on the motor shaft, killing airflow.

How to Fix It

  1. Clean the lint screen and rinse it with warm soapy water to remove softener film.
  2. Disconnect the transition hose from the wall and inspect both ends for lint.
  3. Run a vent brush through the wall duct out to the exterior cap.
  4. Check the exterior vent cap — make sure the flapper opens freely and isn't screened over.
  5. Replace any crushed foil duct with smooth rigid or semi-rigid metal duct.
  6. Reconnect and run a Timed Dry — code should clear.
  7. If AF persists with a verified-clear vent, inspect the blower wheel for cracks or wobble and replace if needed.
