GE Dryer HC — Heater circuit fault
GE Dryer · Error code HC
What HC Means
The control detected a fault in the heating element circuit — either the element is open (no heat) or the heater relay/circuit is stuck closed (heat won't shut off). Stop using the dryer until diagnosed.
Symptoms
- HC on display
- No heat at all
- Or runaway heat / clothes scorching
- Burning smell
Common Causes
Element burned out — common after years of service or lint contact.
Vent restriction overheated and popped the one-shot thermal fuse.
Welded contacts keep the element energized.
Hi-limit tripped and stuck open after over-temp event.
How to Fix It
- Unplug the dryer and let it cool.
- Inspect and clean the entire exhaust vent — most heat failures trace back to a clogged vent.
- Measure the heating element for continuity (typically ~10-20 ohms, never OL).
- Test the thermal fuse and hi-limit for continuity (should be closed when cold).
- Replace any failed component (element, thermal fuse, hi-limit are inexpensive — replace as a kit).
- If element and safeties are good but HC persists or heat won't shut off, replace the main control board.
- Run a Timed Dry on Medium heat to verify.
