GE Microwave F7 — Stuck key on function keypad

GE Microwave · Error code F7

What F7 Means

F7 means the control sees a key on the touch / membrane keypad held down for too long (typically more than ~60 seconds). The microwave locks out cooking until the key is released or the keypad is replaced.

Symptoms

  • F7 displayed, beeping
  • One pad may feel sticky, bulged, or unresponsive
  • Pressing CLEAR/OFF does nothing
  • Code returns shortly after reset

Common Causes

1
Grease or moisture under the membrane keypad

Contamination shorts a key continuously.

2
Physically damaged / bubbled keypad

Heat or impact has deformed the membrane so a key is always pressed.

3
Damaged keypad ribbon or trim

A crimp from the trim screws can pinch the tail.

4
Control board input failure

Only suspect after a new keypad still triggers F7.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the microwave for 5 minutes, then restore power — if F7 clears and stays clear, you're done.
  2. Inspect the keypad surface for bulges, sticky residue, or moisture.
  3. Gently clean the keypad face with a damp cloth and mild detergent — never spray cleaner directly.
  4. If F7 returns, unplug and disconnect the keypad ribbon at the control to confirm the fault is in the keypad (F7 should change to a 'no keypad' fault).
  5. Replace the membrane touch pad / control panel with the OEM part for your model.
  6. If a new keypad still throws F7, replace the control board.
