GE Microwave F8 — Damper / vent motor fault
GE Microwave · Error code F8
What F8 Means
On over-the-range GE microwaves, F8 typically indicates the damper (vent flap) motor or its position switch is not reporting the expected state. The vent fan may run constantly or refuse to start.
Symptoms
- F8 in display
- Vent fan stuck on or won't run
- Damper flap visibly stuck open or closed
- Code returns after reset
Common Causes
The small motor that opens/closes the vent flap has burned out or jammed.
Grease buildup or a warped flap keeps it from moving freely.
Wire pulled loose during install or cleaning.
Rare — verify motor and wiring first.
How to Fix It
- Unplug the microwave.
- Remove the vent grille on top of the unit to access the damper assembly.
- Manually move the damper flap — it should swing freely. Clean any grease binding the hinge.
- Disconnect the damper motor harness and check for power per the tech sheet during a fan-on command.
- Measure the motor for continuity / replace it if open or seized.
- Reassemble, restore power, and cycle the vent fan to confirm F8 is gone.
