GE Refrigerator dE — Defrost system fault
GE Refrigerator · Error code dE
What dE Means
The defrost system has not completed a successful cycle in the last 24 hours. The evaporator coil is icing over, which will eventually cut airflow to both compartments and cause warming. Usually the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or main board.
Symptoms
- dE on dispenser display
- Frost build-up on freezer back wall
- Fridge warming over time even though freezer feels cold
- Hissing / fan rubbing ice
Common Causes
Calrod or glass tube heater across the evaporator burned out — most common physical cause.
Never closes to allow current through the heater.
Board never calls for defrost — replace if heater and thermostat test good.
Board cannot tell coil is iced and skips defrost.
How to Fix It
- Manually defrost: unplug and let the unit sit with doors open and towels down for 8+ hours.
- Remove the freezer back panel to access the evaporator.
- Test the defrost heater for continuity (should be a few-hundred ohms; open = bad).
- Test the defrost thermostat cold (below 25°F) — should read closed / continuity. Open when cold = bad.
- Check the evap thermistor against the spec curve.
- If all components test good, replace the main control board.
- Plug back in and watch a full 24-hour cycle to confirm dE does not return.
