GE Refrigerator Er FF — Freezer thermistor circuit failure
GE Refrigerator · Error code Er FF
What Er FF Means
The control board sees the freezer thermistor as open or shorted (not just out of range). Until the sensor signal returns, freezer cooling will be erratic — many boards will run the compressor 100%.
Symptoms
- Er FF on display
- Freezer over-cooling or warming
- Compressor running constantly
- Frost on items
Common Causes
Wire break or sensor failure — most common cause.
Pinched wire behind the back panel after a previous repair.
Moisture intrusion into the sensor plug — clean and reseat.
Board's sensor input has failed — last resort.
How to Fix It
- Unplug the unit.
- Remove freezer back panel to expose the thermistor (usually clipped near the evaporator).
- Ohm-check the thermistor at room temp (~10 kΩ) and again iced (~16 kΩ at 32°F).
- Inspect the harness back to the main board — repair any damage.
- Replace thermistor if out of spec.
- If sensor and wiring both test good, replace the main control board.
