Er FF — Freezer Evaporator Fan Failure

Er FF means Freezer Fan failure — the freezer evaporator fan motor is not running (often from frost on the blade or a failed motor), not a thermistor fault. Check the evaporator fan motor and for frost buildup. The freezer temperature sensor is a separate code.

How to fix it

  1. Unplug the unit.
  2. Remove freezer back panel to expose the thermistor (usually clipped near the evaporator).
  3. Ohm-check the thermistor at room temp (~10 kΩ) and again iced (~16 kΩ at 32°F).
  4. Inspect the harness back to the main board — repair any damage.
  5. Replace thermistor if out of spec.
  6. If sensor and wiring both test good, replace the main control board.

Why it happens

Typical signs: Er FF on display · Freezer over-cooling or warming · Compressor running constantly · Frost on items

  • Freezer thermistor open / shorted Wire break or sensor failure — most common cause.
  • Damaged sensor harness Pinched wire behind the back panel after a previous repair.
  • Corroded connector Moisture intrusion into the sensor plug — clean and reseat.
  • Main control board Board's sensor input has failed — last resort.
