dF — Defrost cycle failure

Similar to dE but specifically logged when defrost did not run on its scheduled interval. Frost build-up is starting; act before the unit warms.

How to fix it

  1. Manual defrost: unplug 8+ hours with doors open.
  2. Remove freezer back panel and inspect the evaporator for heavy ice.
  3. Continuity-test the defrost heater — open = replace.
  4. Cold-test the bimetal defrost thermostat (should be closed below ~25°F).
  5. Test evap thermistor resistance.
  6. Replace whichever component fails its test. If all pass, replace the main control board.

Typical signs: dF code blinking on display · Frost forming on freezer interior · Temperatures slowly rising · Compressor running constantly

  • Defrost heater open Most common — heater element burns out and defrost cycle does nothing.
  • Defrost thermostat / bimetal stuck open Never closes to complete the heater circuit.
  • Evaporator thermistor failed Board can't tell when defrost is needed or complete.
  • Main control board failed Board internally can't trigger defrost relay.
