Error 1 Moderate Easy DIY

iRobot Robot Vacuum Error 1 — Side wheel stuck / off ground

iRobot Robot Vacuum · Error code Error 1

What Error 1 Means

Roomba detects that one or both side (drive) wheels are hanging down or stuck and not making proper contact with the floor.

Symptoms

  • Robot stops and announces 'Error 1'
  • Robot may rock back and forth before stopping
  • Wheel spins freely with no resistance
  • Robot stranded on edge of rug or step

Common Causes

1
Robot hung up on edge or obstacle

Wheel dropped into a gap, off a ledge, or tangled in cords/fringe so it can't get traction.

2
Debris wrapped around wheel axle

Hair, string, or carpet fibers wound around the wheel assembly preventing normal movement.

3
Wheel module stuck in dropped position

The spring-loaded wheel module is jammed and won't retract back into the body.

4
Failed wheel module

Internal gearbox, motor, or encoder in the wheel module has failed.

How to Fix It

  1. Pick the robot up and place it on a flat, open floor away from edges and clutter.
  2. Push each side wheel up into the body and let it drop — it should spring back smoothly.
  3. Flip the robot over and inspect both wheels for hair, string, or debris wrapped around the axle.
  4. Use scissors or a seam ripper to cut away tangled hair, then pull it out with tweezers.
  5. Spin each wheel by hand — it should rotate freely with even resistance.
  6. Press CLEAN to restart. If Error 1 returns immediately on a flat floor, the wheel module needs replacement.
  7. Replace the wheel module (sold as left/right assemblies for most series).
