Error 8 Moderate Easy DIY

iRobot Robot Vacuum Error 8 — Suction / vacuum motor problem

iRobot Robot Vacuum · Error code Error 8

What Error 8 Means

The vacuum motor is jammed, clogged, or has failed to spin up properly.

Symptoms

  • 'Error 8' voice prompt
  • Reduced or no suction noise
  • Robot stops shortly after starting
  • Bin shows little debris collected

Common Causes

1
Clogged airflow path

Bin inlet, filter, or vacuum tube blocked with debris or pet hair.

2
Dirty or wet filter

Filter saturated with dust or moisture restricts airflow.

3
Bin sensor dirty (i/j/s series)

IR full-bin sensors in the bin cavity covered in dust.

4
Failed vacuum motor

Motor bearings worn or impeller jammed.

How to Fix It

  1. Empty the dustbin completely.
  2. Remove the filter, tap it out, and reinstall (replace if older than 2 months or visibly clogged).
  3. Inspect the bin inlet for clogs — clear with a finger or compressed air.
  4. On i/j/s/Combo series, wipe the bin sensor windows in the robot's bin cavity with a dry cloth.
  5. Check the rubber extractors and brush area for blockage.
  6. Reinstall bin firmly and press CLEAN. If Error 8 persists, the vacuum motor module needs replacement.
