iRobot Robot Vacuum Error 9 — Bumper stuck or sensor dirty

iRobot Robot Vacuum · Error code Error 9

What Error 9 Means

The front bumper is stuck in the pressed-in position or its sensor cannot detect movement.

Symptoms

  • 'Error 9, tap Roomba's bumper to clean'
  • Bumper feels stuck or doesn't spring back fully
  • Visible debris around bumper gap

Common Causes

1
Debris jammed in bumper gap

Hair, dirt, or grit in the gap between the bumper and the robot body prevents free movement.

2
Bumper sensor obstructed

Dust on the internal bumper switch or sensor.

3
Bumper spring damaged or detached

After impacts the internal spring can break or come unseated.

How to Fix It

  1. Tap the bumper firmly several times — you should feel it click and spring back smoothly.
  2. Use compressed air to blow out the gap around the entire bumper perimeter.
  3. Wipe the bumper edges with a slightly damp cloth and dry.
  4. For persistent issues, remove the top cover (model-specific) and clean around the bumper switch.
  5. Press CLEAN to test. If bumper feels loose or won't spring back, the bumper assembly needs replacement.
