E6 Serious Moderate DIY

LG Washer E6 — Clutch / pulsator obstruction (top load)

LG Washer · Error code E6

What E6 Means

Top-load LG washers throw E6 when the clutch is jammed — almost always by a coin, hairpin, or zipper pull wedged between the pulsator and the drum.

Symptoms

  • E6 on the display
  • Pulsator won't rotate or feels stiff
  • Grinding/clicking noise during agitation
  • Cycle aborts before agitation

Common Causes

1
Coin or small object stuck under the pulsator

The most common cause — items work through the pulsator gap during agitation.

2
Loose pulsator bolt

The center bolt under the cap loosened, letting the pulsator wobble and bind.

3
Broken clutch assembly

Splines or coupler in the clutch are stripped.

4
Failed motor coupling

Drive coupling between motor and transmission worn out.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the washer or turn the breaker off for 4 minutes to clear the code, then plug back in.
  2. Open the lid and remove every item from the drum.
  3. Shine a flashlight along the seam between the pulsator (center spinner) and the drum.
  4. Use needle-nose pliers to extract any coin, paper clip, hair tie, or zipper pull seen.
  5. Try to rotate the pulsator by hand — should turn smoothly with mild resistance.
  6. Pop the center cap on the pulsator, check the bolt is tight (do not over-torque).
  7. Run a Tub Clean cycle empty to verify; if E6 returns, the clutch or coupling needs service.
