F8E2 Serious Hard — consider a tech

Maytag Microwave F8E2 — Magnetron / High-Voltage Fault

Maytag Microwave · Error code F8E2

What F8E2 Means

Control has detected an abnormal current draw from the high-voltage circuit — typically a shorted magnetron, HV diode, or capacitor.

Symptoms

  • F8E2 mid-cycle, often shortly after start
  • Loud humming followed by code
  • No heat or partial heat
  • Tripped breaker

Common Causes

1
Shorted high-voltage diode

HV diode failed shorted, causing excessive current draw.

2
Failed high-voltage capacitor

Capacitor internal short pulls excessive line current.

3
Failed magnetron

Magnetron internal short between filament and anode.

4
Burnt HV transformer

Transformer winding shorted.

How to Fix It

  1. WARNING: HV capacitor stores lethal charge. Qualified technicians only.
  2. Unplug, wait 5 minutes, and discharge the HV capacitor with an insulated screwdriver.
  3. Visually inspect HV components for burn marks, bulging, or arcing damage.
  4. Test HV diode with a high-voltage-capable meter or 9V battery + multimeter — should conduct one direction only.
  5. Test HV capacitor with a capacitance meter and check for short to case.
  6. Test magnetron filament continuity and short-to-case.
  7. Replace any failed component; on diode failures, replace the diode AND inspect magnetron.
  8. Test heating with a cup of water for 60 seconds.
