Maytag Microwave F8E2 — Magnetron / High-Voltage Fault
Maytag Microwave · Error code F8E2
What F8E2 Means
Control has detected an abnormal current draw from the high-voltage circuit — typically a shorted magnetron, HV diode, or capacitor.
Symptoms
- F8E2 mid-cycle, often shortly after start
- Loud humming followed by code
- No heat or partial heat
- Tripped breaker
Common Causes
HV diode failed shorted, causing excessive current draw.
Capacitor internal short pulls excessive line current.
Magnetron internal short between filament and anode.
Transformer winding shorted.
How to Fix It
- WARNING: HV capacitor stores lethal charge. Qualified technicians only.
- Unplug, wait 5 minutes, and discharge the HV capacitor with an insulated screwdriver.
- Visually inspect HV components for burn marks, bulging, or arcing damage.
- Test HV diode with a high-voltage-capable meter or 9V battery + multimeter — should conduct one direction only.
- Test HV capacitor with a capacitance meter and check for short to case.
- Test magnetron filament continuity and short-to-case.
- Replace any failed component; on diode failures, replace the diode AND inspect magnetron.
- Test heating with a cup of water for 60 seconds.
