E1 — Indoor/Outdoor Communication Error

E1 means the indoor head and outdoor unit have lost communication with each other. On MrCool DIY and other Midea-platform units this is most often a wiring or connection fault on the signal wire between the two units.

How to fix it

  1. Turn both units off at the breaker, wait five minutes, and power back up — a one-time communication glitch after a power blip clears this way.
  2. If E1 returns, call an HVAC technician (or, on a recent DIY install, the installer — even if that was you, this is the point to bring in a pro). The signal wiring between the units and the control boards on both ends have to be checked live, and that is not owner-safe work.
  3. What the technician will do: verify the signal wire connections at both ends, check supply voltage to the outdoor unit, and test which control board has gone quiet. On DIY-installed systems a loose or mis-numbered interconnect wire is the usual finding — a quick fix once located.

Why it happens

Typical signs: Unit stops cooling/heating · Indoor display shows E1 · Outdoor unit not running

  • Loose or miswired communication wire The control/signal wire (often terminal S or 2/3) between indoor and outdoor is loose, reversed, or corroded. #1 cause on DIY installs.
  • Failed indoor or outdoor control board A PCB on either end has failed.
  • Voltage/power problem Low or unstable supply voltage to the outdoor unit.
