How to fix it

  1. Power-cycle at the breaker: off for five minutes, back on.
  2. If F1 returns, call an HVAC technician. The ambient sensor is inside the outdoor unit's cabinet, and getting to it means opening panels near line-voltage parts.
  3. What the technician will do: test the T4 sensor and replace it if failed — a quick, inexpensive repair. Until then the unit may misjudge outdoor conditions (odd defrost timing, conservative operation) but is not being damaged.
