E3 — Indoor Fan Speed Out of Control

E3 means the indoor fan motor is not running at the commanded speed — the board expects a certain RPM feedback and is not seeing it.

How to fix it

  1. Clean the air filters: lift the indoor unit's front panel by hand (it hinges up without tools), slide the mesh filters out, rinse, dry, and reinstall. A choked filter makes the fan work harder than its motor can manage.
  2. Power-cycle at the breaker for five minutes and listen on restart — a fan that hums, stutters, or scrapes is telling you the motor or blower is binding.
  3. If E3 returns with clean filters, call an HVAC technician; describe any noise you heard. The blower and its motor sit behind the housing, which is not owner territory.
  4. What the technician will do: check the blower wheel for buildup or obstruction, test the fan motor and its speed feedback, and replace the motor or control board as indicated.
