F0 — Overload / Current Protection

F0 is an overcurrent or refrigerant-system protection trip — the outdoor unit detected current or pressure outside safe limits and shut down to protect the compressor.

How to fix it

  1. Walk out to the outdoor unit and clear everything around it — leaves, grass clippings, snow, covers, anything against the coil. If the visible coil fins are matted with dirt, rinse them gently with a garden hose from the outside only (no panels off, no pressure washer).
  2. Power-cycle at the breaker: off for five minutes, back on, and let it try again.
  3. If F0 returns, stop there and call an HVAC technician — repeated protection trips mean current or pressure is genuinely out of range, and continuing to restart it risks the compressor.
  4. What the technician will do: measure the running current and system pressures, and verify the refrigerant charge. On DIY installs an incorrect charge is a common finding, and correcting it is regulated, gauges-and-scale work — there is no owner-side version.

Why it happens

Typical signs: Outdoor unit stops · Poor or no cooling/heating · F0 on the display

  • Low or overcharged refrigerant An incorrect charge or a leak (common after a DIY line-set install) pushes current/pressure out of range.
  • Restricted airflow over the outdoor coil Dirty coil or blocked airflow makes the compressor work too hard.
  • Failing compressor or capacitor Electrical fault in the outdoor unit.
