Samsung Refrigerator 84 C — Compressor Lock / Multi-Sensor Fault
Samsung Refrigerator · Error code 84 C
What 84 C Means
Samsung uses 84 C as a catch-all for issues with defrost sensor, ice maker, ice pipe heater, ice fan, or — most seriously — a compressor lock (the compressor motor is stalled). Compressor lock usually means the inverter PCB or the compressor itself has failed.
Symptoms
- Fridge and freezer warming up
- Compressor not running or clicking on/off rapidly
- Possible humming followed by silence
- Code displayed on Family Hub or LED
Common Causes
Linear/inverter compressor seized or windings failed — motor won't spin.
The small board mounted on or near the compressor isn't driving it correctly.
Open thermistor or heater can latch the same code on some models.
Heater that keeps the water fill tube from freezing has failed.
How to Fix It
- Unplug the fridge for 5-10 minutes and listen on restart — compressor should attempt to start within ~30 seconds.
- Check the inverter PCB on the back of the cabinet for blinking fault LEDs (count the blinks; service manual decodes them).
- Measure compressor winding resistance and to-ground continuity (a shorted winding is a dead giveaway).
- Inspect the defrost sensor and ice pipe heater for continuity if compressor is fine.
- Replace the inverter PCB first if the compressor windings are good — boards fail far more often than compressors.
- If a new inverter board doesn't restore compressor operation, the compressor itself is locked and the unit may not be worth repairing.
