85 C Moderate Easy DIY

Samsung Refrigerator 85 C — Low Voltage Detected

Samsung Refrigerator · Error code 85 C

What 85 C Means

On Family Hub models, 85 C means the main board detected an input voltage below spec — usually from a power surge, brownout, or shared circuit with a heavy load. The fridge protects itself by shutting down non-essential systems until voltage recovers.

Symptoms

  • Display shows 85 C after a storm or outage
  • Touchscreen unresponsive
  • Cooling may continue or pause

Common Causes

1
Recent power surge or brownout

Utility event tripped the under-voltage protection.

2
Shared circuit with high-draw appliance

Fridge sharing an outlet with a microwave, space heater, or vacuum.

3
Failed surge protector / loose outlet

Marginal connection dropping voltage at the cord.

4
Main PCB drift

Rare — sensing circuit on the board has failed.

How to Fix It

  1. Press and hold OK on the Family Hub display for ~3 seconds to clear the alert.
  2. Unplug the refrigerator directly into a known-good wall outlet (not a power strip or surge protector).
  3. Verify the outlet measures 110-125 VAC with a multimeter.
  4. Move any high-draw appliances to a different circuit.
  5. If the error returns repeatedly with good voltage, suspect the main PCB.
