$30-70 moderate difficulty 1 hour Tools: screwdriver, nut driver, multimeter

Diagnose first: Heating element coil broken. Check for clogged vent (root cause of most heater failures) and replace thermal fuse at the same time.

How to fix it

  1. Unplug the dryer.
  2. Verify 240V at the outlet (both legs hot to ground).
  3. Remove rear access panel.
  4. Measure heating element resistance — should be ~10–50 ohms. Infinite = replace element.
  5. Test thermal fuse for continuity — must read closed; if open, replace AND inspect vent.
  6. Test high-limit thermostat for continuity.
  7. Clean entire vent run from machine to exterior hood.
  8. Reassemble and run a heat test cycle.

Why it happens

Typical signs: E64 shown on display · Drum tumbles but no heat · Clothes still wet at end of cycle · Cycle completes but cold

  • Burned-out heating element Open coil — most common cause. Element resistance reads infinite.
  • Blown thermal fuse on blower housing Usually a symptom of restricted vent; replace fuse AND clear vent.
  • Open high-limit thermostat Tripped from prior overheat.
  • Broken wire in heater circuit Especially around drum contact points.
  • House supply only delivering 120V (one leg lost) Electric dryer needs 240V — verify both legs hot at outlet.
