What causes the Er Co code on a GE refrigerator?

The main control board and the dispenser / UI board have lost serial communication. Most user functions go dark even though cooling may still work briefly. Often a wiring harness or board failure.

How to fix it

Unplug the unit for 5 minutes to attempt a soft reset.
Disassemble the dispenser to expose the ribbon connector — unplug, inspect for corrosion, reseat firmly.
Open the freezer-door hinge cover and inspect for pinched / broken wires.
If reseating doesn't restore comms, swap in a known-good dispenser UI board first (cheaper than main).
If still failing, replace the main control board.
