IF Minor Easy DIY

LG Dryer IF — Interior filter assembly fault

LG Dryer · Error code IF

What IF Means

IF indicates the interior (secondary) lint filter assembly is missing, improperly seated, or the magnet that confirms its position is missing. The dryer will not run because operating without the filter allows lint into the heat exchanger.

Symptoms

  • IF on display
  • Dryer will not start
  • Recently cleaned or removed inner filter

Common Causes

1
Interior filter not seated

Filter not pushed in completely after cleaning.

2
Filter installed backwards

Orientation arrow not aligned per manual.

3
Missing/dislodged sensor magnet

Magnet in the filter housing has come loose.

4
Failed reed switch / position sensor

Sensor in the cabinet does not detect the magnet.

How to Fix It

  1. Remove the interior filter, inspect for damage, and reinstall fully in the correct orientation.
  2. Confirm the filter clicks into place; if not, look for missing or broken retention tabs.
  3. Look for a small magnet embedded in the filter frame — if missing, replace the filter.
  4. If a known-good filter is installed correctly and IF persists, unplug and access the position sensor in the filter cavity; test continuity with the magnet present/absent.
  5. Replace the sensor if it does not switch states.
  6. Reassemble and verify the dryer starts a normal cycle.
