F3 E2 Serious Moderate DIY

Whirlpool Refrigerator F3 E2 — Freezer Thermistor Fault

Whirlpool Refrigerator · Error code F3 E2

What F3 E2 Means

The control board detected an open or shorted freezer compartment thermistor. Without a valid freezer temperature reading, defrost timing and compressor control go wrong.

Symptoms

  • Flashing 'F' on display
  • Freezer too warm or rock-hard cold
  • Frost building on freezer back wall
  • Ice cream soft despite display showing 0°F

Common Causes

1
Failed freezer thermistor

Sensor reads open or shorted to the control board.

2
Disconnected sensor harness

Connector unseated after service or vibration.

3
Sensor frozen in ice

Heavy frost from a stuck defrost cycle has encased the probe.

How to Fix It

  1. Power-cycle the refrigerator for 5 minutes.
  2. Remove the freezer back panel — locate the thermistor clipped near the evaporator.
  3. Check for heavy frost. If the coil is iced over, thaw it (turn off, leave doors open with towels for 8 hours) — there is also likely a defrost system problem.
  4. Test resistance: about 16kΩ at 0°F or 30kΩ in ice water (32°F). Replace if open or out of range.
  5. Reseat the connector at the main board if the sensor reads correctly.
  6. Replace the main control board if wiring and sensor are both good.
