Whirlpool Refrigerator F3 E2 — Freezer Thermistor Fault
Whirlpool Refrigerator · Error code F3 E2
What F3 E2 Means
The control board detected an open or shorted freezer compartment thermistor. Without a valid freezer temperature reading, defrost timing and compressor control go wrong.
Symptoms
- Flashing 'F' on display
- Freezer too warm or rock-hard cold
- Frost building on freezer back wall
- Ice cream soft despite display showing 0°F
Common Causes
Sensor reads open or shorted to the control board.
Connector unseated after service or vibration.
Heavy frost from a stuck defrost cycle has encased the probe.
How to Fix It
- Power-cycle the refrigerator for 5 minutes.
- Remove the freezer back panel — locate the thermistor clipped near the evaporator.
- Check for heavy frost. If the coil is iced over, thaw it (turn off, leave doors open with towels for 8 hours) — there is also likely a defrost system problem.
- Test resistance: about 16kΩ at 0°F or 30kΩ in ice water (32°F). Replace if open or out of range.
- Reseat the connector at the main board if the sensor reads correctly.
- Replace the main control board if wiring and sensor are both good.
