Whirlpool Refrigerator F3 E9 — Ambient Thermistor Fault
Whirlpool Refrigerator · Error code F3 E9
What F3 E9 Means
The ambient (room temperature) sensor is open or shorted. This sensor lets the control compensate cooling for hot/cold kitchens; a fault can cause too much or too little cooling depending on room temperature.
Symptoms
- Flashing 'F' on display
- Fridge over-cools in a cold garage
- Fridge under-cools in a hot kitchen
- Compressor runtime seems wrong for the season
Common Causes
Usually mounted on the main control board or near the user interface.
Sensor is on the UI ribbon and the cable unseated.
If the sensor is integrated on the UI PCB, the entire UI assembly is replaced.
How to Fix It
- Unplug the refrigerator for 5 minutes; verify code returns.
- Consult your tech sheet to locate the ambient sensor — many models put it on the main control or behind the dispenser UI.
- Reseat the UI ribbon cable and any harnesses to the main control board.
- If the sensor is a discrete thermistor, ohm it out and replace if open.
- If sensor is integrated on the UI board, replace the dispenser/UI control board.
- Replace the main control if the issue persists with a known-good UI.
