Whirlpool Refrigerator F4 E1 — Damper Control Fault
Whirlpool Refrigerator · Error code F4 E1
What F4 E1 Means
The freshfood air damper (which controls how much cold air enters the fresh food side from the freezer) is not moving as commanded. The fresh food side will either freeze food or run too warm depending on where the damper is stuck.
Symptoms
- Flashing 'F' on display
- Lettuce/eggs freezing in fresh food
- Fresh food too warm despite freezer being cold
- Damper motor not heard cycling
Common Causes
Stepper motor in the damper has failed or the door is iced shut.
Air leak/humidity caused ice to lock the flap.
Connector unseated at the damper or main board.
How to Fix It
- Unplug for 5 minutes — if code clears and returns, continue.
- Remove the upper rear panel of the fresh food compartment to access the damper.
- Visually check for ice — thaw if needed, then identify the source of moisture (door seal, drain line).
- Listen for the damper stepper motor — it should click during temperature transitions.
- Reseat the damper connector. If still inoperative, replace the damper assembly.
- Replace the main control board if a new damper does not resolve the code.
