How to fix it

  1. Unplug the refrigerator for 5 minutes.
  2. Reseat every connector you can access on the main control board (back of cabinet, behind rear access panel).
  3. Reseat the UI harness behind the dispenser/display.
  4. Inspect door-hinge wiring for chafing.
  5. If wiring is good, replace the UI control board first; replace the main control board only if a new UI does not clear it.

Why it happens

Typical signs: 'SY CE' or 'SY EF' on display · Display partial or scrambled · Dispenser or ice maker not responding · Random feature failures

  • Loose inter-board harness Comms cable between boards has unseated.
  • Failed user interface board UI lost its ability to talk to main control.
  • Failed main control board Main control comms transceiver failed.
  • Failed inverter (linear compressor models) Inverter not reporting back to main control.

Replace your water filter

A clogged or overdue water filter is a common cause of low water and ice flow on Whirlpool refrigerators — they are meant to be changed about every 6 months. The OEM-style filter that fits most Whirlpool refrigerators is the EDR1RXD1 ($40-50 OEM, $15-25 compatible).
