Whirlpool Washer F4E1 — Heater Not Activating

Whirlpool Washer · Error code F4E1

What F4E1 Means

On front-loaders with internal water heaters (Sanitize / Allergen / Steam cycles), the control commanded the heater on but didn't see it draw current or heat the water. Either the heater element is open, its relay failed, or the wiring opened up.

Symptoms

  • Sanitize / Allergen / Steam cycle fails mid-run
  • Wash water never gets hot
  • F4 E1 around the heating phase
  • Heater relay on the main board may be visibly burnt

Common Causes

1
Open heater element

Element has burnt out. Should ohm-test at ~30-34Ω.

2
Failed heater relay on control board

Relay contacts welded open.

3
Loose heater wire / connector

Spade terminal pulled off the heater.

4
Tripped thermal cutoff in heater

One-shot fuse opened during a dry-fire event.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the washer.
  2. Remove the front lower panel or rear to access the heater leads near the bottom of the tub.
  3. Disconnect the heater leads and ohm the element — should be 30-34Ω. Open = replace the element.
  4. If the element is good, check for ~120V at the leads while the washer commands the heater on (use caution — live test).
  5. No voltage = bad heater relay on the main control board — replace the main control.
  6. Look for and replace any in-line thermal fuse that's open.
