The lid locked at the start of the cycle but the control can't get it back to the unlocked position when the cycle ends. The mechanism is jammed or the lock motor died mid-cycle.

How to fix it

  1. Unplug the washer for 5 minutes — about half the time the lock pops on power-up.
  2. If still locked, drain the tub via the drain hose, then look for the manual lid-release tab (top-load) or pull-cord under the front service panel (front-load).
  3. Once open, inspect the strike hole for debris.
  4. Replace the lid lock assembly if the mechanism is binding or the motor is dead.
  5. Verify with a Drain & Spin cycle that lock/unlock now completes.
