Rinnai Tankless Water Heater 70 — PCB / Control Board Fault

Rinnai Tankless Water Heater · Error code 70

What 70 Means

The control board has detected an internal fault. Often unrecoverable without board replacement.

Symptoms

  • Code 70 on power-up
  • Unit unresponsive
  • Repeated random faults

Common Causes

1
PCB failure

Internal component fault.

2
Power surge damage

Lightning or grid surge.

3
Moisture intrusion

Water reached the board in damp install.

4
Dip-switch configuration error

Worth verifying before replacing board.

How to Fix It

  1. Verify dip-switch settings and unit parameters match the install manual for model and gas type (on condensing models, switch #2 in the bank of 6 should be ON for indoor and OFF for outdoor units).
  2. Check all wiring harness connections at the PC board for loose, broken, or damaged plugs. On condensing models, check the sensor harness at the E connector — outdoor models should have 2 orange cables at positions 7 and 8; indoor models should have none. Replace the sensor harness if this is wrong.
  3. Inspect the PCB for visible damage, burn marks, or moisture.
  4. Power-cycle at the breaker for 60 seconds.
  5. If the code returns and wiring and configuration are correct, replace the PCB.
  6. After the board swap: SENSEI-series models require transferring data from the old board with the supplied data-transfer cable (or manually programming all parameters per the instructions packed with the new board); on older non-SENSEI boards, set the dip switches to match the old board exactly.
