Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Making Ice — Causes & Fix
An ice maker that stops producing is almost always a water-supply problem, not a dead ice maker. Run through these in order — the first two fix most cases and cost little or nothing.
Start With the Water Filter and Temperature
A clogged filter (over six months old) chokes off the trickle the ice maker needs — replace it with the correct one for your fridge and flush 2-4 gallons. Next, check the freezer temperature: ice makers need about 0 F to 5 F (-18 C to -15 C) to cycle. If the freezer is too warm, the unit won't harvest. Also confirm the ice maker's on/off arm or switch wasn't bumped to OFF and that the bin is seated.
Frozen Fill Tube (Very Common)
The small fill tube that drips water into the ice mold often freezes over, blocking water — this is one of the most common no-ice causes. Symptoms: the ice maker cycles but produces no or tiny/hollow cubes. Fix: unplug the fridge or shut off the ice maker, and thaw the fill tube with a hair dryer on low or a turkey baster of warm water. If it refreezes quickly, the inlet valve may be leaking slightly or the freezer is running too cold.
Water Valve and Ice-Maker Module
Make sure the water shutoff valve behind/under the fridge is fully open and the supply line isn't kinked. The inlet water valve (electrically operated, at the back) can fail or clog and is the part that feeds both the dispenser and ice maker — if neither makes water, suspect it. Finally, if water reaches the mold and the freezer is cold but it still won't cycle, the ice-maker module/assembly itself may have failed; these are sold as a complete unit and are a moderate DIY swap.
