If your refrigerator water tastes funky, metallic, or smells off, the number-one cause is an old water filter — and it is the cheapest, fastest thing to rule out. Here is how to fix the taste, in order of likelihood.
Most Likely: A Spent Water Filter
Carbon water filters are only good for about six months. Past that, they stop removing chlorine and odors and can actually harbor bacteria that make water taste or smell worse than tap. If you can't remember the last change, replace it now — match the exact filter your fridge uses (Whirlpool EveryDrop, Samsung DA29, LG LT-series, GE MWF/XWFE, etc.). This fixes the taste in the large majority of cases.
Just Changed the Filter? Flush It
A brand-new filter often makes water taste or look bad at first because of loose carbon fines and trapped air. Run 2-4 gallons through the dispenser and discard it — the cloudiness and sputtering clear up. Give it a few hours and a couple of ice-maker cycles (toss the first batch of ice) for fully fresh water and ice.
