GE Washer E22 — Drain Pump / Drain Time Exceeded
GE Washer · Error code E22
What E22 Means
The washer did not drain within the allowed time. Control flagged a drain fault, usually a clogged pump filter, kinked hose, or weak/failed drain pump.
Symptoms
- Water remains in tub at end of cycle
- Cycle stalls during drain or spin
- E22 flashes on display
- Pump hums but no flow
Common Causes
Lint, coins, or hair locking the impeller is the #1 cause on GE front-loaders.
Check the hose behind the machine and where it enters the standpipe — must not exceed 96 inches in height.
House drain backed up; water can't leave the standpipe.
Pump electrically dead or seized; will not pump even when path is clear.
Rare — control no longer sends 120V to pump.
How to Fix It
- Power off and unplug the washer.
- Place a shallow pan and towels under the front-right access panel.
- Open the pump filter (coin trap) and clear lint, debris, and coins.
- Pull the washer out and inspect the drain hose for kinks or clogs.
- Verify the standpipe height is 30–96 inches and not blocked.
- Spin the pump impeller by hand — it should turn freely.
- If the pump hums but doesn't move water, replace the drain pump.
- Restore power and run a Drain & Spin to confirm.
