GE Washer E54 — Motor Control / Drive Motor Fault
GE Washer · Error code E54
What E54 Means
The motor control unit (inverter) detected a problem driving the motor — could be a winding fault, overcurrent, or communication loss with the main board.
Symptoms
- Tub doesn't spin or agitate
- Loud humming with no movement
- Burning smell from rear of washer
- E54 on display
Common Causes
MCU is the most common failure point on GE front-load drive systems.
Open winding or shorted motor draws excess current.
Connector between MCU and motor not seated.
How to Fix It
- Unplug the washer.
- Remove the rear panel and inspect the motor and inverter for burn marks.
- Reseat the motor harness on both ends.
- Measure motor winding resistance with a multimeter — should be balanced across phases.
- If motor is good, replace the MCU/inverter board.
- If MCU is good and motor reads bad, replace the drive motor.
