GE Washer E76 — Heater Circuit Fault

GE Washer · Error code E76

What E76 Means

On models with an internal heater (front-loaders with Sanitize/Steam), the heater element or its relay has failed. Water didn't reach target temp in time.

Symptoms

  • Sanitize / Steam cycles fail or run extremely long
  • E76 on display
  • Clothes feel cold after a hot wash

Common Causes

1
Failed heating element

Element open or shorted to ground.

2
Tripped heater thermal fuse

One-shot fuse opens after overheat event.

3
Failed temperature sensor (NTC)

Control gets bad temp reading and times out the heat step.

4
Control board heater relay failure

Relay won't close to energize element.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the washer.
  2. Access the heater (front bottom or rear depending on model).
  3. Measure element resistance — typically 20–30 ohms; infinite means open.
  4. Test the NTC thermistor — resistance should change with temperature.
  5. Replace the heating element if open or shorted.
  6. Replace the NTC if out of spec.
  7. If both check good, replace the main control board.
