Maytag Dryer F22 — Outlet Thermistor Fault

Maytag Dryer · Error code F22

What F22 Means

The exhaust outlet thermistor is reading out of range (open or shorted). The control cannot regulate drying temperature safely and will stop or fail to start.

Symptoms

  • F22 displayed
  • Dryer stops mid-cycle
  • No heat or runaway heat complaint preceding the code
  • Long dry times

Common Causes

1
Failed exhaust thermistor

Open winding or drift out of spec is the most common cause.

2
Loose or corroded thermistor wiring

Harness connector at thermistor or ACU is loose.

3
Clogged exhaust vent causing extreme heat

Overheated thermistor has been damaged.

4
Failed main control board (ACU)

Less common — input circuit failed.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the dryer and access the blower housing where the outlet thermistor mounts.
  2. Disconnect the thermistor and measure resistance — should read about 10 kΩ at 77°F (25°C).
  3. If open, shorted, or far off spec, replace the thermistor.
  4. Inspect the harness from thermistor back to the ACU for chafe or loose pins.
  5. Clean the entire vent path back to the wall hood — a clogged vent often kills thermistors.
  6. Run a heated cycle and confirm the code does not return.
