F28 Moderate Easy DIY

Maytag Dryer F28 — Moisture Sensor Communication Fault

Maytag Dryer · Error code F28

What F28 Means

The moisture sensor strips inside the drum are not providing valid readings. Automatic dry cycles can't sense dampness properly.

Symptoms

  • F28 on display
  • Auto-dry cycles end too early
  • Clothes still wet at end of auto cycle
  • Timed dry works fine

Common Causes

1
Fabric softener / dryer sheet residue on sensor strips

Most common — film insulates the strips so they always read 'dry'.

2
Loose sensor harness behind the drum

Connector backed off the moisture sensor terminals.

3
Failed moisture sensor

Strips cracked or burned through.

4
ACU input failure

Less common — moisture circuit on the board has failed.

How to Fix It

  1. Open the door and locate the two stainless steel sensor strips on the front bulkhead (just inside the drum opening).
  2. Wipe them with a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol or a fine 3M pad to remove residue.
  3. Run an auto-dry cycle with a damp load and see if the code returns.
  4. If it persists, unplug the dryer and check the sensor harness behind the front panel for a loose connector.
  5. If wiring is intact, replace the moisture sensor assembly.
  6. Verify operation with a test load.
