Maytag Dryer F31 — Motor Drive System Fault

Maytag Dryer · Error code F31

What F31 Means

The control has detected a problem driving the drive motor — either no rotation feedback, a stalled motor, or an overcurrent condition.

Symptoms

  • F31 on display
  • Drum doesn't turn
  • Loud hum then stop
  • Motor runs briefly and quits

Common Causes

1
Failed drive motor

Open winding or seized bearings.

2
Broken drive belt with idler pulling on switch

On models where belt loss is detected as a motor fault.

3
Failed motor capacitor or run circuit

On models with a separate run cap.

4
ACU motor output failure

Triac or relay failed on the main board.

5
Object jammed in blower or drum

Coin or screw locked the blower wheel.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the dryer.
  2. Rotate the drum by hand — should turn freely with mild belt resistance. If locked, find the obstruction in the drum or blower wheel.
  3. Remove the belt and try to spin the motor and blower wheel by hand — must spin freely.
  4. Measure motor windings against the tech sheet; replace if open or shorted.
  5. If motor is good, check for ACU damage at the motor relay/triac and replace ACU if scorched.
  6. Reassemble and test on a Timed Dry cycle.
